EUAA introduces self-assessment tool to enhance asylum procedure quality
In August 2025, the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) introduced a Self-Assessment Tool to help national authorities evaluate the quality of their asylum procedures. Based on EUAA operational standards and indicators, the tool provides a structured method for self-assessment. It aims to help administrations identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance with EU standards. A descriptive version of the tool is currently available to guide implementation.
The Self-Assessment Tool is intended for national asylum authorities, including policymakers, decision-makers, and quality assurance officers. It provides a framework for assessing key aspects of the asylum procedure, including procedural fairness, efficiency, and adherence to legal standards. By supporting internal evaluations, the tool promotes continuous improvement and alignment with EU asylum practices.
The tool’s methodology is based on the EUAA’s Guidance on Asylum Procedure: Operational Standards and Indicators. It provides a set of criteria and indicators that authorities can use to review their procedures systematically. The tool encourages participation from various stakeholders involved in the asylum process to ensure a complete evaluation. While the IT version is still under development, the descriptive version serves as an interim guide for implementation.
Using the Self-Assessment Tool, national authorities can pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in their asylum procedures and take concrete steps to improve them. Examples include measuring the timeliness of initial interviews, checking that applicants receive clear information, and ensuring consistency in decision-making. The tool also guides authorities through steps such as reviewing case files, interviewing staff, and identifying procedural bottlenecks. As the IT solution becomes operational, it is expected to offer enhanced functionalities, further supporting national administrations in their quality assurance efforts.
