Mentor Jeunes calls on foster families to host unaccompanied foreign minors

On 4 September, the non-profit organisation Mentor Jeunes held an online information session for families willing to foster unaccompanied foreign minors. The initiative highlighted foster care as an alternative to collective centres, offering children a safe and structured home environment. It also explained the individualised support available to both families and young people, aiming to encourage more households to consider joining the programme.

In Belgium, most unaccompanied minors are accommodated in reception centres, where professional teams provide guidance and care. For the youngest, the most vulnerable, or those for whom collective housing is not suitable, foster care is offered as a complementary solution. Developed in partnership with Fedasil and the Youth Assistance services, the project provides a family setting intended to support children’s wellbeing, stability and integration.

The foster care scheme is open to all types of households, with no fixed profile required. Each placement is designed on an individual basis, taking into account the needs of the child and the characteristics of the family. Mentor Jeunes accompanies both parties throughout the process and during the placement itself, offering psychosocial, educational, legal and administrative support until the young person reaches majority.
