Joint Fedasil and EUAA conference sheds light on innovative multistakeholder models

On 22 May 2024, a joint conference hosted by Fedasil and the EUAA highlighted innovative collaboration models designed to strengthen migration systems. The event brought together diverse participants from various EU Member States, including government bodies, international organisations, civil society groups, and private entities. It focused on strategies to improve the reception, information provision, and pre-integration of international protection applicants.

As part of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Belgian Federal agency for the reception of asylum seekers (Fedasil) and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) organised a conference to explore and underscore the importance of robust multi-stakeholder partnerships.

The conference highlighted the following key points:

  • Now that the Pact on Migration and Asylum has been adopted, attention is now focused on its effective implementation, which requires engaging diverse stakeholders, a principle consistently emphasised throughout the conference. It was underscored that state authorities can not fulfil their legal obligations under the Pact without reinforcing collaborations with various partners and sectors within society. In essence, it has been said that, without these partnerships, the Pact cannot be realised.

  • Regarding multistakeholder models for providing reception conditions, participants stressed the importance of flexible and adaptable reception systems across the EU. Conversations focused on fostering stakeholder collaboration to bolster and diversify reception capacity, promote supportive environments within local communities, and tailor facilities to address diverse needs.

  • Addressing the legal obligation to provide comprehensive information to asylum seekers, experts explored various models to provide correct, coherent and comprehensive information throughout the asylum application process. They showcased innovative approaches like mobile teams and alternative communication methods.

  • Furthermore, the event explored multi-stakeholder initiatives to facilitate the pre-integration of asylum seekers during their stay in reception facilities. In breakout sessions, lively debates centred on multi-stakeholder models to support labour market integration, enable access to housing following a positive decision, and promote participation in society.

The conference provided fruitful discussions and collaborations among participants from diverse sectors.
