EP/Council deal on better social rights and conditions for non-EU seasonal workers
The European Parliament and Council provisionally agreed on a draft directive that will manage temporary legal migration and ensure protection of workers from exploitation.
Over 100.000 third-country seasonal workers come to the EU every year and many are victims of exploitation. To put an end to this and to ensure non-EU seasonal workers more protection, for the first time, rules on seasonal work will be agreed upon at EU level.
The directive will aim to end exploitation and to prevent temporary stays becoming permanent, putting down conditions of entrance and stay in the EU and setting standards on social rights towards third-country seasonal workers.
The agreed text will be put to a vote by the the European Parliament (EP)'s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE Committee) on 14 November 2013 and a plenary vote in January 2014.
