Duo for a Job celebrates 10 years of existence

For 10 years now, the Duo for a Job association has aimed inter alia to help eliminate inequalities in access to the labour market for young people with a migrant background. Results are conclusive as seven out of ten young people successfully find a stable job, an internship or training that leads them to the job they initially wanted.

DUO for a JOB is an intergenerational mentoring program that allows volunteers aged 50+ (mentors), to support young job seekers (mentees), and boost their chances of getting a job. The mentors share their knowledge and expertise with the mentees in order to allow them to develop their skills and autonomy, and to enable them to identify and achieve professional objectives. This relationship (“the duo”) is based on exchanging, learning and permanent and reciprocal trust. Once paired, the young person and his or her mentor meet for two hours a week for six months.

The association was created in 2013 and celebrates thus ten years of existence. In total, 5,500 duos were formed in 10 years. The association has now different branches in Belgium and is also established in France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, with 17 branches spread across these four countries.

According to Axelle Le Brettevillois, communications director, 80% of the future workers who are getting support were born abroad. To calculate the success rate, Duo for a job waits one year to find out if the person has found a job. And the results are rather conclusive. “We have a success rate of seven out of ten young people. They find a stable job, an internship or training that leads them to the job they initially wanted. Half of them find a fixed-term or permanent contract.”
