CGRS resumes processing of Syrian applications for international protection
The Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) is resuming the processing of applications for international protection from Syrian nationals from 1 November 2025. The suspension, in place since 9 December 2024, was implemented to gather sufficient information on the security situation in Syria.
In December 2024, the CGRS temporarily suspended the processing of Syrian applications for international protection following the fall of the Assad regime. The suspension aimed to allow time to collect reliable and current information to accurately assess protection needs. Planned personal interviews were cancelled, and only cases of individuals already enjoying protection in another EU Member State were continued.
The CGRS announced that it has gathered sufficient objective information for an accurate assessment of Syrian applications for international protection and that it will resume processing them as of 1 November 2025. Applicants will be invited to personal interviews, and those who have previously attended an interview may be re-invited. Applicants do not need to take any action unless they have additional documents relevant to their claim, which should be submitted promptly to the CGRS.
