Belgium welcomed 122.300 new permanent-type migrants in 2022, according to the OECD

The International Migration Outlook 2023, published today by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), highlights inter alia that permanent-type migration to OECD countries increased by 26% in 2022 compared with 2021. In Belgium and in many OECD countries, permanent-type migration was higher in 2022 than in any of the previous 15 years. 

According to the International Migration Outlook 2023, permanent-type migration to OECD countries reached an all-time record in 2022 at 6.1 million new permanent immigrants. This represents a 26% year-on-year increase. Belgium welcomed 122.300 new permanent-type migrants in 2022. This is a 9% increase compared to 2021.

The OECD also published interesting figures relating to labour market outcomes for migrants:

  • In two-thirds of OECD countries, the gap in employment rates between migrants and native-born individuals narrowed significantly in 2022. As a result, at 72.3%, the average employment rate of migrants in OECD countries almost caught up with that of the native-born population (72.7%). In Belgium, the average employment rate of migrants amounted to 61,5% and remained 6,3% lower than with the native-born in 2022
     
  • In OECD countries, the average unemployment rate for migrants amounted to 7,6% and remained on average 2,4% higher than with the native-born. In Belgium, the unemployment rate of migrants amounted to 9,5% and remained 4,9% higher than with the native-born in 2022
