Belgium saw an increase in immigration and first residence permits between 2021 and 2022, according to Myria

Myria has published the first thematic section of its 2024 annual report. This section entitled "Population and movements" reveals that, largely due to the war in Ukraine, Belgium recorded a 48% increase in immigration of foreigners into the country in 2022, compared to 2021. It also highlights that the number of first residence permits increased by 52% in 2022, compared to 2021.

Myria, the Federal Migration Centre, releases the 2024 annual report “Migration in figures and rights” in several thematic notebooks. On 30 May, the first thematic section entitled "Population and movements" was published, highlighting, among other things, the following conclusions:

  • In 2022, 211.822 foreign immigrations were recorded in Belgium, an increase of 48% compared to 2021.

  • Among the main nationalities, Ukraine necessarily comes in first position, accounting for 27% of all foreign immigration. Next come Romania (10%), France (6%), the Netherlands (5%), Spain (4%) and Morocco (3%).

  • Ukrainians represent 84% of migrants from non-EU European countries (57,514 immigrations), while Romanians represent 25% of migrants from the EU and 59% of migrants from the thirteen new Member States of the EU (22,177 immigrations).

  • In 2022, 191.370 first residence permits were issued to people of foreign nationality residing in Belgium. This corresponds to an increase of 52% compared to 2021.

  • 62.110 first residence permits were issued to EU citizen immigrants. The main reasons for stay for this group are reasons linked to paid activity (51%), ahead of family reasons (28%) and studies (7%).

  • For immigrants from third countries, 109.295 first residence permits were issued. Among third-country nationals, temporary protection is the main reason for migration (47%), followed by family reasons (21%), study-related reasons (8%), paid activities (7%) and international protection (7%).
