Acquisition of Belgian nationality will cost €1.000 in registration fees
The Belgian Chamber of Representatives has adopted a law raising the fee for registering the acquisition of Belgian nationality from €150 to €1.000. The change, included in the programme law adopted on 18 July 2025, forms part of a broader package of budgetary measures. The new fee will apply to applications submitted after the law enters into force and will be indexed annually.
This legislation gives effect to a commitment made in the January 2025 coalition agreement, in which the governing parties announced plans to tighten access to Belgian nationality and align administrative fees with those of neighbouring countries. Until now, the registration fee had remained unchanged since its introduction at €150.
The government’s position reflects a clear intention to tighten the conditions for acquiring Belgian nationality, emphasising the importance of personal responsibility, including financial accountability. As Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt stated, this step should not be merely administrative or automatic but must be accompanied by a sense of responsibility, also in financial terms.
However, the increase has drawn criticism from several NGOs and opposition parties, who argue that the higher fee may create new barriers for long-term residents with limited financial means. They warn that such measures could undermine social inclusion and complicate integration efforts.
