It examines how the status is applied, who benefits from it, and the operational challenges encountered. The publication also identifies gaps in data collection and coordination between agencies. Finally, it offers evidence‑based recommendations to strengthen victim protection and improve the overall effectiveness of the system.

Op 27 maart 2026 nam EMN België deel aan de studiedag van Myria en het Nationaal Instituut voor Criminalistiek en Criminologie (NICC) getiteld "Het smokkelstatuut onder de loep", waar de resultaten werden voorgesteld van het onderzoeksrapport over de toepassing van het smokkelstatuut in de praktijk.

Four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Belgium has granted more than 101.500 temporary protection certificates to people fleeing the conflict. Today, around 70.600 of these displaced Ukrainians remain in the country. While the temporary protection scheme has been extended until March 2027, uncertainty remains over what will happen afterwards, raising questions for both the authorities and Ukrainian beneficiaries.

On 19 February 2026, EMN Belgium attended a Mutual Learning Seminar organised by ECRE (European Council on Refugees and Exiles) within the framework of the INNOVATE project, supported by EU funding under the Horizon 2020 programme.Held in Brussels, the seminar brought together experts, civil society representatives and policymakers to assess the state of preparedness across EU Member States for transitioning out of temporary protection under the Temporary Protection Directive, currently extended until March 2027.

The TRAQ study day will take a close look at the status of victims of smuggling in human beings under aggravating circumstances in Belgium. Introduced in 2006, this residence status for victims who cooperate with authorities has seen limited use and has never been thoroughly analysed. Within the framework of « TRAQ » (Trafic Analyses Qualitatives), Myria and the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (INCC) conducted a study on its implementation. The findings will be shared to stimulate discussion and reflection among experts and stakeholders.

Op 4 juni 2025 heeft de Europese Commissie voorgesteld om de tijdelijke bescherming voor ontheemden die vluchten voor het conflict in Oekraïne te verlengen tot 4 maart 2027. Met dit voorstel wil de Commissie juridische zekerheid bieden aan de begunstigden en de lidstaten door een consistent beschermingsniveau in de hele Europese Unie te behouden. Daarnaast stelde de Commissie een pakket maatregelen voor om een gecoördineerde overgang uit de tijdelijke bescherming te faciliteren.

De nationale conferentie van EMN Finland voor 2024 onderzoekt de stand van zaken en de toekomstperspectieven van de situatie van Oekraïners in Finland en in EU-landen. De conferentie richt zich op de uitdagingen van integratie in een situatie waarin personen die tijdelijke bescherming genieten zich tussen twee landen bevinden. De conferentie probeert deze personen te ondersteunen in het spanningsveld tussen integratie en terugkeer.
