Ter gelegenheid van wereldbevolkingsdag verklaarde Eurostat dat, na een bevolkingsdaling in 2020 en 2021 vanwege de COVID-19 pandemie, de EU-bevolking in 2022 weer is gestegen. De negatieve natuurlijke groei (meer overlijdens dan geboortes) werd gecompenseerd door eeen positief migratiesaldo.

In 2022 werden 141 060 niet-EU burgers toegang geweigerd tot het EU territorium. Geschat werd dat 1.08 miljoen mensen irregulier aanwezig waren in een EU land. 422 400 niet-EU burgers kregen een bevel om het grondgebied te verlaten. Na een bevel om het grondgebied te verlaten, warden 96 795 niet-EU burgers teruggekeerd naar een ander land (waaronder ook EU landen). 77 530 onder hen keerden terug naar een land buiten de EU.

In het vierde kwartaal van 2022 kregen 123 865 niet-EU-burgers het bevel een EU-land te verlaten (+11% vergeleken met het derde kwartaal van 2022), en werden 28 155 niet-EU-burgers teruggestuurd naar een ander land (inclusief andere EU-landen) na een bevel om te vertrekken (+9% vergeleken met Q3 2022).

In 2021 kwamen naar schatting 2,3 miljoen immigranten uit niet-EU-landen naar de EU en ongeveer 1,1 miljoen mensen uit de EU emigreerden naar een land buiten de EU. Dit is een belangrijke stijging ten opzichte van 2020.

On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, which is organized every year on 20th June by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Eurostat published an infographic on annual asylum data for 2018 . Eurostat also published its Asylum quarterly report. In the first quarter of 2019, the number of first-time asylum applicants slightly increased : 4% more compared to the 4th quarter of 2018.
