More than 330.000 asylum applicants in the EU-27 in 2012, according to Eurostat
Eurostat disseminates statistics on asylum applicants and first instance decisions in 2012, highlighting that there were 332.000 asylum applicants in 2012 in comparison with 302.000 in 2011.
The Eurostat press release inter alia concludes that:
- The main countries of citizenship of asylum applicants in 2012 were: Afghanistan, Syria, Russia, Pakistan and Serbia.
- Germany, France, Sweden, the UK and Belgium registered the highest number of applicants.
- The highest rates of applicants were recorded in Malta, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Hungary.
- In 2012 in the EU27, 73% of first instance decisions made on asylum applications were rejections, while 14% of applicants were granted refugee status, 10% subsidiary protection and 2% authorisation to stay for humanitarian reasons.
