What

In the context of the unprecedented number of migrants and refugees arriving in Europe, the EU has taken a range of measures to address the challenges created by migration. But migration is not just an issue for Europe. Countries of origin or transit of irregular migration flows also need to be involved.

The international summit of Valletta will provide the EU,  African and other key countries concerned with the opportunity to discuss migration issues and to find common solutions to challenges of mutual interest. The discussions will focus on five specific areas:

  1. addressing the root causes by working to help create peace, stability and economic development;
  2. improving work on promoting and organising legal migration channels;
  3. enhancing the protection of migrants and asylum seekers, particularly vulnerable groups;
  4. tackling more effectively the exploitation and trafficking of migrants;
  5. working more closely to improve cooperation on return and readmission.
