UNHCR data shows high sea arrivals in Europe in 2025
Did you know that the UNHCR Operational Data Portal provides detailed, up-to-date information on sea arrivals in Europe? As of 24 August 2025, a total of 89.189 people have reached European shores by sea. The majority of these arrivals have been recorded in Italy and Greece, while Spain also received significant numbers. In 2024, a total of 187.337 sea arrivals were reported, illustrating the continued importance of Mediterranean and North-West African routes.
The UNHCR compiles its figures from national authorities, partner organisations, and field observations. The Operational Data Portal provides regularly updated statistics on arrivals by sea and land, enabling policymakers, researchers, and the public to track migration trends in real time.
Between January and 24 August 2025, Italy recorded 40.266 arrivals via the Central Mediterranean route, while Greece reported 28.467 arrivals via the Eastern Mediterranean route, mainly on the Aegean islands. Spain received 10.693 arrivals via the Western Mediterranean route, as well as 11.916 arrivals to the Canary Islands via the West Africa Atlantic route. Cyprus recorded 1.546 arrivals. The UNHCR notes that “these figures reflect ongoing migration pressures in the Mediterranean region” and adds that “safe and legal pathways, adequate reception facilities, and protection measures remain essential for all arrivals”.
During 2024, UNHCR recorded 187.337 sea arrivals across Europe. Greece, Italy, and Spain were the main points of arrival. The report "Sea Arrivals Overview" also noted the number of dead or missing individuals, though monthly breakdowns were not consistently available. UNHCR emphasises that “monitoring and reporting remain crucial to ensure protection and assistance are provided where needed”.
