Sharp increase in long-stay visas for economic reasons in Belgium in 2022
Myria has published the first thematic section of its 2023 annual report. This section entitled "Access to the territory" presents the main key figures relating to short and long-stay visas as well as the different reasons and nationalities that stood out in 2022.
In this publication, Myria inter alia highlights that:
- The numbers of short- and long-stay visa applications are contrasting: While the number of applications for short-stay visas (C visas) is up sharply in 2022 compared to 2020 and 2021, it remains lower than the years before the pandemic. The number of applications for long-stay visas (D visas) has been increasing since 2020. It has reached a higher level than what was observed before the start of the crisis.
- The numbers of short-stay visas granted for economic reasons, students and for tourism are lower than before the pandemic: With 45% fewer short-stay visas granted between 2019 and 2022 for tourism and 34% fewer for students and economic reasons, these two categories have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. On the other hand, in 2022, the number of C visas granted for family reasons has returned to a number close to what was observed before the Covid-19 crisis. The main beneficiaries of these short-stay visas are Indians and Moroccans.
- The number of long-stay visas granted for economic reasons is on the rise: In 2022, all nationalities combined, a majority (43%) of long-stay visas concerned family migration. Student migration is in second place, followed by economic migration. The number of long-stay visas for economic reasons has increased significantly since 2021 (2,500 more visas granted). Three nationalities clearly stand out in this respect: Turks, Moroccans and Tunisians, whose D visas have almost doubled between 2021 and 2022.
- Visa applications for humanitarian reasons receive the most refusals: In 2022, 43% of short-stay visas for humanitarian or medical reasons were refused and 44% of long-stay visas for humanitarian reasons. All visas combined, this is the category for which visa refusals are the most frequent.
