Preparations and Agenda for GFMD 2012 presented at the HLWG on Asylum and Migration in Brussels

GFMD 2012 will focus on "Enhancing the Human Development of Migrants and their Contribution to the Development of Communities and States". A provisional agenda (as of 3 September 2012) was presented at the High Level Working Group on Asylum and Migration on 13 September.

The Ambassador of Mauritius provided an overview of past and future preparatory activities and further explained the thematic focus for the Global Forum for Migration and Development (GFMD) 2012 that will take place on 21-22 November 2012, putting emphasis on:

  • Outcomes that will make a difference for migrants, diaspora, their families, and communities and states of origin and destination, and that may be achieved in the coming years to guide the future work
  • The specific needs and challenges of African countries and their migrants and diaspora, also in the South-South migration and development context
  • Close consultations with civil society and international organizations, particularly the Global Migration Group (GMG) to support GFMD governments in achieving agreed desirable outcomes
  • Engagement of the private sector and diaspora as appropriate to support governments in achieving agreed outcomes
