Possibilities and realities of return migration
PREMIG is a four-year research project 2011-2014 based at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). The project addresses return migration from Norway and the United Kingdom
PREMIG carried out in collaboration with Statistics Norway (SSB), the Sussex Centre for Migration Research, and the University of Bristol. PREMIG is funded by the Research Council of Norway’s VAM programme.
The project explores the following questions: 1) How do immigrants reflect upon and decide about return migration? 2) How is the possibility of return related to integration and transnationalism? 3) How can we explain the patterns of who returns and who stays? 4) How is return experienced by migrants who go back to their countries of origin, and by the communities to which migrants return?
PREMIG considers both voluntary and involuntary forms of return. The project addresses return migration from Norway and the United Kingdom through a combination of case studies and statistical analysis. PREMIG case studies cover return to Afghanistan, Burundi, Iraq, Pakistan and Poland.
