Online Conference: Threats to the Independence of the European Court of Human Rights

Amnesty International and the Human Rights League are proposing a meeting with Françoise Tulkens, former judge and Vice-President of the European Court of Human Rights, and Manuela Cadelli, judge at the Court of First Instance of Namur, to examine the consequences of the letter from nine European authorities calling for a new interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

What

On 22 May 2025, nine EU Member States, including Belgium, issued a letter calling for a new interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to facilitate the expulsion of foreign nationals convicted of crimes. This initiative has sparked numerous reactions, particularly from individuals and organisations that defend human rights.

In this context, various questions arise, particularly regarding the problems raised by this letter and its effects, including the risk of endangering the rule of law. These questions will be addressed by Françoise Tulkens, former judge and Vice-President of the European Court of Human Rights, and Manuela Cadelli, judge at the Court of First Instance of Namur, during the live meeting.

When

On 12 June 2025, from 12:30 until 13:45.

Where

Online.
