NANSEN supports victims of torture throughout the international protection procedure

On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, NANSEN highlights its work with applicants for international protection who have experienced torture. The organisation provides legal information and tailored support to help them navigate the protection procedure. Victims of torture are entitled to specific procedural guarantees. NANSEN ensures that these rights are respected throughout their application process.

Victims of torture often face additional obstacles during the international protection procedure, including difficulties in recounting their experiences, accessing medical care, or obtaining adequate legal representation. Recognising these challenges, NANSEN offers specialised assistance to ensure that victims are identified early, informed of their rights, and supported in a way that respects their specific vulnerabilities.

NANSEN’s work includes providing legal information sessions, one-on-one follow-up and coordination with other support services. When necessary, the organisation also intervenes with relevant authorities to ensure that procedural safeguards are implemented and that the person’s right to a fair procedure is upheld. Through this work, NANSEN aims to ensure that victims of torture are not left behind in the international protection process and can exercise their rights with dignity.
