MPI: Belgium a Country of Permanent Immigration
The article, reveals that family-related migration is the main driver for Belgium’s recent transition to a country of permanent settlement, with significant numbers of foreign-born students, workers, and refugees.
New data show that 14 percent of the Belgian population is foreign born, with over 40 percent comprised of Italians, French, and Dutch nationals, and also significant Moroccan- and Turkish-born immigrant populations.
The article, which seeks to give an overview of Belgium's migration history over a number of years, investigates the politicization of migration in the country – in large part driven by the rise of far-right parties in Flanders – which has led to the new migration-integration-Islam debate. It also puts into perspective the Belgian government’s recent move to tighten naturalization policies.
