Minister Van Bossuyt updates Parliament on internal checks against irregular and secondary migration

Belgium introduced targeted internal checks in July 2025 to address irregular and secondary migration. The measures are applied at airports, international bus and rail stations, and motorway rest areas. Over 11.000 individuals have been checked, with some ordered to leave the territory or placed in closed centres. The government plans to continue the checks and to conduct a six‑month evaluation.

In July 2025, Belgium implemented targeted internal checks under Article 23 of the Schengen Borders Code, following similar measures in neighbouring countries such as France, the Netherlands, and Germany. According to Minister Van Bossuyt, the checks are intended to prevent Belgium from becoming a transit point for people staying without legal authorisation and to provide authorities with a clearer overview of arrivals. Operations are conducted at airports, international bus and rail stations, and motorway rest areas, involving cooperation between the Federal Police, local police services, and the Immigration Office.

Between 1 July and 11 September 2025, a total of 11.136 individuals were checked. Forty administrative reports were sent to the Immigration Office, resulting in 18 orders to leave the territory and 14 transfers to closed centres, while no new decisions were taken for the remaining eight cases. No requests for international protection were recorded during this period. According to the Minister, each interception contributes to enforcing the rules on legal residence and is intended to enhance security.

Following an assessment of early results, the government decided to focus more on rail traffic, where the checks reportedly proved most effective. The Minister indicated that internal checks will continue while respecting police capacity and other operational priorities. A comprehensive evaluation of the measures is planned after six months.
