MEP's approve Eurosur operating rules
The Members of the European Parliament approved the operating rules of Eurosur, a communication network that enables Member States to share real-time images and data on development at the EU's external borders.
On 10 October 2013, the Members of the European Parliament have agreed on the operating rules of Eurosur.
Other aspects of the use of Eurosur also were agreed upon, including the absolute respect for human rights - like the principle of non-refoulement - and protection of all EU fundamental rights, for example in the exchange of personal data. Furthermore, member states must not use Eurosur to send third countries any information that could be used to identify a person whose request for international protection is being processed or whose life or physical integrity could be at risk.
Background
Eurosur aims to improve the management of the EU's external land and sea borders by stepping up information exchange among member states and with the EU border management agency Frontex. This includes sharing real-time data and intelligence from various authorities and surveillance tools, such as satellites or ship reporting systems, via a protected communication network. The network is designed to improve the detection, prevention and combating of irregular immigration and cross-border crime, but also serves to save migrant's lives.
More information on Eurosur can be found on the website of FRONTEX.
