International migration will be a key factor in population growth in Belgium from 2038, according to Statbel

Statbel has published demographic projections for 2024-2070 and concluded that Belgium’s population will reach 12.9 million by 2070. International migration will be the main driver of growth after 2038, as the natural balance turns negative by the end of the 2030s.

In a recent press release, Statbel highlighted several key demographic trends for Belgium. The population is expected to continue growing, reaching 12.9 million inhabitants by 2070. However, the natural balance, which represents the difference between births and deaths, will turn negative by the end of the 2030s.

From 2038 onward, international migration will be the sole driver of positive population growth in Belgium. Projections indicate that by 2070, immigration will reach 165.000 people per year, while emigration will amount to 134.000 people annually.

These immigration flows are primarily fueled by demographic growth in non-EU countries, also known as third countries.
