Fortress Europe: No way in? The EU in urgent need of a migration policy

PES Group in the Committee of the Regions invites all to join the debate on the - lack of - development of a genuine Common European Asylum System and European Immigration policy.

1. What?

The Lampedusa tragedy have showed that the European Union to date is failing to protect the lives and fundamental rights of people who seek safety and opportunities in the EU. While some important steps have been taken since the Tampere Council in 1999 to develop a Common European Asylum System, there still is no real European immigration policy.

Local and regional authorities in all parts of the EU are confronted with the challenges produced by the slow progress at national and EU level.
