The EU has over the last year been faced with a series of challenges with major repercussions for migration, asylum and border management. Today's report takes stock of the progress achieved and the key developments in the area of migration and asylum over the past year, notably highlighting:
- Unprecedented solidarity with Ukraine
- Strong external border management
- Working with international partners
- Countering hybrid threats
Recent migration-related developments, coupled with the continuous pressure stemming from irregular migration on several routes, show a sustainable and fair EU migration system is indispensable. The Pact on Migration and Asylum is ever more relevant. The year ahead will be decisive for legislative work on migration and asylum that is urgently needed to complete the EU’s ability to respond with solidarity, responsibility and fairness, to all challenges. The Commission looks forward to progress on the roadmap agreed between the Council and the Parliament in order to reach agreement on key legislative files by Spring 2024.
