EMN Slovakia Conference: Sustainable labour mobility in action: Bilateral pathways for a prosperous Slovakia

The event will bring together policymakers, experts, employers, and migrant organisations from both EU and non-EU countries to share good practices in managing bilateral labour mobility. Key themes include protecting migrant workers, improving coordination, and ensuring that labour migration benefits all parties involved.
What:
The 2025 EMN Slovakia Conference offers an opportunity to discuss how bilateral labour mobility partnerships can support Slovakia’s economic growth while ensuring fair and ethical recruitment practices. As the country faces significant labour shortages across key sectors, its new Migration Strategy (June 2025) emphasises the need to facilitate access for skilled workers from non-EU/EEA countries. At the same time, it highlights the importance of integration and protection of migrant workers. The conference will bring together Slovak and international policymakers, experts, employers, and migrant-led organisations to exchange knowledge and explore models for sustainable, well-regulated mobility.
The discussions will focus on practical examples of bilateral labour mobility cooperation between EU destination countries and non-EU countries of origin. Participants will address how to design agreements that balance national workforce needs with fair treatment and rights for migrant workers. Special attention will be given to mechanisms ensuring protection, monitoring, and coordination, key elements for transparent and responsible labour migration governance. The conference will also promote dialogue on how bilateral pathways can contribute to both national development and international solidarity.
Finally, the event aims to strengthen Slovakia’s coordinated national approach to labour migration management. Following the conference, the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family will convene a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for Labour Migration and Integration of Foreigners (MEKOMIC), reinforcing cooperation across institutions.
