Due to the saturation of the reception network, only 71 refugees were resettled last year in Belgium

In 2022, Fedasil welcomed 71 refugees resettled in Belgium, mostly Syrians from Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon. This figure is not in line with the objectives set at the beginning of last year.

The Fedasil reception network has been facing a shortage of places since last year, which has caused the postponement of transfers of refugees selected for resettlement. In this context, only 71 refugees were resettled in Belgium last year (compared to 964 refugees resettled in Belgium in 2021).

Fedasil has sought alternative reception models to ensure the continuity of the resettlement program. For this reason "community sponsorship" was introduced in Belgium. This project involves setting up a volunteer citizens' reception group - in collaboration with Fedasil and the partner organization (Caritas or SB Overseas) – which supports resettled refugees for one year in their process of arrival and settlement in the Belgian society.
