Diversity by origin has increased in Belgium over the past decades, according to Statbel

According to the figures released by Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, the share of Belgians with a Belgian background has decreased from 79,9% in 2004 to 64,8% in 2024. The share of Belgians with a foreign background increased by 5,1 percentage points between 2004 and 2014. The proportion of non-Belgians increased from 8.3% in 2004 to 13.7% in 2024.

On 5 June 2024, Statbel released figures related to the population structure, inter alia:

  • On 1 January 2024, 64.8% of the Belgian population was Belgian with a Belgian background, 21.6% was Belgian with a foreign background and 13.7% was non-Belgian.

  • There are important differences when comparing the three Belgian regions. For example, while at Belgian level, one in five was a Belgian with a foreign background, the percentage is the lowest in Flanders with 16,4%, rising to 24,8% in Wallonia and ending at 40,2% in the Brussels-Capital Region.

  • Nearly all Belgians with a Belgian background (98.4%) were born in Belgium. At the same time, 68.9% of Belgians with a foreign background and 14.7% of non-Belgians were born in Belgium.

  • The group of Belgians with a foreign background is composed of 50% who do not have the Belgian nationality as their first registered nationality but have acquired it in the meantime, and 50% who have the Belgian nationality as first registered nationality (in 20.9% have two parents with a foreign first registered nationality and in 29.1% have one parent with a foreign first registered nationality).

  • The largest group of Belgians with a foreign background and non-Belgians, 53.6%, are in the non-EU27 nationality group. In this regard, there are once again some important differences when comparing the three regions. For example in the Walloon Region, there is a larger share originating from an EU27 country. The Brussels-Capital Region contains the largest proportion of people with a nationality of origin outside the EU27 zone.
