CGRS publishes asylum statistics for September 2013

Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.

The statistics for September 2013 contain the following information:

• In September 2013, 1.485 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is an increase compared to previous month (August 2013: 1.294 applications) but less compared to the same month of last year (September 2012: 1.702 applications).

• The main countries of origin for September 2013 were Iraq (8,5% of the total number of applications for September 2013), Russia (8,1%), Syria (7,7%), Afghanistan (6,6%) and Guinea (6,2%). DR Congo, Kosovo, China, Albania and Pakistan complete the top 10 of countries of origin.

• In September 1.385 asylum decisions were taken by the CGRS, granting the refugee status in 215 cases. In 152 cases subsidairy protection was granted.

• The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012 and is now reduced to about 7.926 files.
