CGRS publishes asylum statistics for October 2012
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for October show the following trends:
• In October 2012, 2.026 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is an increase compared to September 2012 (1.702 applications), but a decrease compared to October 2011 (2.604 applications).
• The main countries of origin for October 2012 were: Afghanistan (10,7% of the total number of applications), Guinea (8,2%), Russia (6,7%), DR Congo (6,5%) and Syria (6,2%). Iraq, Kosovo, Albania, China and Georgia complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
• In October 1.855 asylum decisions were taken by the CGRS, granting the refugee status in 337 cases. In 202 cases subsidairy protection was granted.
• The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012.
