CGRS publishes asylum statistics for July 2013
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for July 2013 show the following trends:
• In July 2013, 1.311 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is an increase compared to previous month (June 2013: 1.214 applications) but a significant decrease compared to the same month of last year (July 2012: 1.868 applications).
• The main countries of origin for July 2013 were DR Congo (8,4% of the total number of applications for July 2013), Guinee (7,2%), Afghanistan (7,1%), Russia (6,4%) and Kosovo (6%). Syria, Iraq, Rwanda, Serbia and Senegal complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
• In July 1.480 asylum decisions were taken by the CGRS, granting the refugee status in 320 cases. In 143 cases subsidairy protection was granted.
• The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012 and is now reduced to about 8.500 files.
