CGRS publishes asylum statistics for January 2014

Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.

The statistics for January 2014 show the following trends:

  • In January 2014, 1,376 asylum applications were registered in Belgium. This is a decrease of 16.3% compared to January 2013.
  • Of those  1,376 asylum applications, 622 (or 45.2% of the total number of applications) were multiple applications.
  • In January, the main countries of origin were Afghanistan (306 apllications, 22.2% of the total number of applications), Syria (7.3%), Russia (6.4%), RD Congo (6%) and Guinea (5.4%). Iraq, Kosovo, Albania, Georgia and Itran complete the top 10 of the countries of origin.
  • In January, the CGRS has taken 1,578 asylum decisions, 300  of those were decisions to grant refugee status and 114 were decisions to grant subsidiary protection status.
  • At the end of January, the total workload of the CGRS was 7,035 cases. 3900 cases can be seen as a normal caseload. The actual backlog is 3,135 cases.
