CGRS publishes asylum statistics for January 2013
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for January 2013 show the following trends:
• In January 2013, 1.644 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is a slight increase compared to previous month (December 2012: 1.589 applications) but a decrease compared to the same month of last year (January 2012: 2.161 applications).
• The main countries of origin for January 2013 were Guinee (10% of the total number of applications for January 2013), Afghanistan (8,9%), Russia (7,3%), DR Congo (6,5%) and Syria (5,9%). Kosovo, Iraq, Senegal, Cameroon and Albania complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
• In January 1.401 asylum decisions were taken by the CGRS, granting the refugee status in 203 cases. In 177 cases subsidairy protection was granted.
• The number of subsequent asylum applications peaked in January 2013 (630 cases).
