CGRS publishes asylum statistics for the first 6 months of 2013
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for June 2013 show the following trends:
• In June 2013, 1214 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is about the same number compared to previous month (May 2013: 1205 applications) but a significant decrease compared to the same month of last year (June 2012: 1726 applications). In the first 6 months of 2013, 8245 asylum applications have been made, which is a decrease of 25% compared to the first 6 months of 2012 (10982 applications).
• The main countries of origin for the first half of 2013 were Afghanistan (9.6% of the total number of applications), Guinea (8,7%), RD Congo (7,6%), Russia (7,1%) and Kosovo (5,3%). Syria, Iraq, Albania, Cameroon and Pakistan complete the top 10 of countries of origin for the first 6 months of 2013.
• During the first 6 months of 2013, 3045 applications were subsequent applications, representing almost 37% of the total number of asylum applications.
• During the first 6 months of 2013, the CGRS has rendered 9190 decisions: 1418 decisions to grant the refugee status and 1113 decisions granting subsidiary protrection. In 2013 the rate of positive decisions so far is 27.5%.
• The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012 and is now reduced to 9.054 cases.
