CGRS publishes asylum statistics for February 2013
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for February 2013 show the following trends:
• In February 2013, 1.392 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is a decrease compared to previous month (January 2013: 1.644 applications) and also a significant decrease compared to the same month of last year (February 2012: 1.884 applications).
• The main countries of origin for February 2013 were Afghanistan (11,6% of the total number of applications for February 2013), Guinee (9,7%), Russia (6,5%), DR Congo (6,3%) and Syria (4,6%). Iraq, Kosovo, Albania, Cameroon and Macedonia complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
• In February 1.675 asylum decisions were taken by the CGRS, granting the refugee status in 242 cases. In 183 cases subsidairy protection was granted.
• The number of subsequent asylum applications remains high (525 cases).
• The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012
