CGRS publishes asylum statistics for August 2013
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for August 2013 show the following trends:
• In August 2013, 1.294 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is comparable with previous month (July 2013: 1.311 applications) but a significant decrease compared to the same month of last year (August 2012: 1.627 applications).
• The main countries of origin for August 2013 were Russia (9,7% of the total number of applications for July 2013), DR Congo (7,6%), Guinea (7,1%), Afghanistan (6,3%) and Iraq (6,1%). Syria, Kosovo, China, Albania and Armenia complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
• In August 1.149 asylum decisions were taken by the CGRS, granting the refugee status in 261 cases. In 180 cases subsidairy protection was granted.
• The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012 and is now reduced to about 8.150 files.
