CGRS publishes asylum statistics for August 2012
Every month, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless persons (CGRS) publishes a document providing the statistics on asylum applications and first instance decisions.
The statistics for August show the following trends:
- In August 2012, 1.627 asylum applications were lodged in Belgium, which is a decrease (-12,8%) compared to July 2012. This is also significant less than August 2011 (-24,3%).
- The main countries of origin for August 2012 were: Afghansitan (10,3% of the total number of applications), Russia (8,4%), Guinea (8,1%), DR Congo (6,3%) and Kosovo (5,2%). Syria, Albania, Iraq, Pakistan and Serbia complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
- In August there were a lot of asylum applications lodged by unaccompanied minors (+44% compared to July 2012).
- In August 1537 asylum decisions were taken, granting the refugee status in 274 cases and 94 decisions were subsidairy protection was granted.
- The total caseload of the CGRS is gradually declining since April 2012.
