Belgium repatriates 75 people from Gaza under family reunification
On Monday, Belgium repatriated 75 people from the Gaza Strip. They arrived at Ostend airport in the afternoon. Belgian authorities report that around 850 eligible individuals have already been evacuated from Gaza. About 150 people remain on the list awaiting evacuation.
In October 2023, the previous government decided that evacuations from Gaza would cover Belgians in Gaza, as well as in Belgium recognised refugees and stateless persons, together with their nuclear family members. Nuclear family members include spouses or legal partners and minor children, while dependent adult children, parents, and minor siblings of unaccompanied minors are assessed on a case-by-case basis. The Belgian evacuation list was drafted based on the above criteria.
According to Myria, between November 2023 and March 2024, around 500 people were evacuated through the Rafah border crossing with assistance from Belgium. Evacuations were then halted following the Israeli ground operation in Rafah. Since March 2025, only occasional evacuations have been possible. These first concerned 38 Belgians and their nuclear family members, after the Israeli authorities temporarily limited authorisations to that group. Since mid-May, that restriction has been lifted, allowing for further evacuations of people on the established list.
Thanks to coordination between the Federal Public Service for Foreign Affairs and the Belgian diplomatic posts in Jerusalem and Amman, 75 people were able to travel to Belgium on Monday as part of family reunification. The Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs is not currently in a position to provide information on possible future evacuations.
