Applications for international protection from Syrians not processed until October 2025
The Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) announced that the suspension of processing of applications for international protection from Syria, a measure in place since December 2024, would be extended until the end of October 2025.
Since 9 December 2024, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) no longer processes applications from Syria. Planned personal interviews were cancelled and assessments were put on hold. This decision followed political developments in the country and was announced as a temporary measure "until the CGRS has sufficient objective information to accurately assess the security situation in Syria and the risk of persecution".
On 30 July 2025, the CGRS announced that this suspension would be extended until the end of October 2025. The suspension was already prolonged once in April, until July. In its announcement, the CGRS explains that "the security situation in Syria remains precarious and volatile, and there is insufficient information available to resume the processing of cases at this time".
Only personal interviews and decisions for persons enjoying a protection status in another EU Member State will be continued.
