Annual Conference of the EMN : « Attracting and retaining talents in Europe» (2 days, Riga)
The Annual Conference of the European Migration Network was held on March 19 and 20. It aimed to provide a global context for the ‘competition for talent’ as well as the practical responses that Member States have developed to ensure that their skills needs can be identified and met.
On 19-20 March 2015 the Annual Conference of the European Migration Network (EMN) took place in Riga on the theme « Attracting and retaining talents in Europe». It was the opportunity to underline that a global and well-managed migration policy can be considered as a means to contribute to boosting economic growth and competitiveness, facing labour shortages and offsetting the costs of demographic ageing.
Participants have exchanged information over five different topics:
(1) global challenges and competition over talents
(2) the European Union’s readiness to attract talented migrants in competition with other countries (3) the European Union and national policies to attract talent
(4) the role of a welcoming culture in retaining talent
(5) and the perspective of migrants and their countries of origin
This event was also the opportunity to illustrate the importance of cooperation with business representatives and social partners in attracting talented migrants in Europe, as well as the development of the education system and other public services for migrants and their families.
