Anneleen Van Bossuyt becomes Belgian Minister of Asylum and Migration

On 3 February 2025, Belgium's new Federal 'Arizona' Government was sworn in before King Philippe. Anneleen Van Bossuyt, from the New Flemish Alliance Party (Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie, N-VA), becomes Minister of Asylum and Migration, Social Integration and Urban Policy.

From 28 June 2022 to date, asylum and migration policy has been the responsibility of Nicole de Moor, Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration in Belgium. Anneleen Van Bossuyt succeeds Nicole de Moor, this time not as Secretary of State but as Minister of Asylum and Migration, Social Integration, and Urban Policy.

Anneleen Van Bossuyt is a lawyer who entered politics in 2014. From 2015 until 2019, she was a Member of the European Parliament for the New Flemish Alliance Party (Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie, N-VA), focusing mainly on consumer protection, the internal market, and policies on innovation, research, and energy. Since 2019, she has served as a Member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, continuing inter alia her work on consumer rights. In 2024, she led N-VA’s local election campaign in Ghent, where she won 10 seats in October (4 more than in 2018), but the N-VA could finally not join the city’s governing majority.

The new Minister of Asylum and Migration stressed that she would work towards "more controlled migration". As stated in the coalition agreement, a "stricter migration policy" will be implemented during the period 2025-2029.
