39.615 persons applied for international protection in Belgium in 2024, that is 11,6% more than in 2023
On 16 January 2025, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) released asylum statistics for the whole year 2024. According to the figures, 39.615 persons, mainly from Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Turkey, applied for international protection in Belgium. The Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration stressed that a large number of these applicants were already registered in another Member State.
The figures released by the CGRS for 2024 show inter alia that:
- In 2024, an average of 3.301 applicants were registered each month. The peak was reached in October, when 4.383 people submitted an application.
- The main countries of origin of applicants for international protection were Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Turkey.
- 2.594 applicants for international protection declared themselves unaccompanied foreign minors (MENA). After the age examination, 823 of them were considered adults.
- The CGRS made a decision in 27.471 cases concerning 34,052 people, which is 14% more than in 2023.
- The CGRS considered that the applicant actually needed international protection status in 47.2% of final decisions.
- Of these decisions, 45.3% were decisions to recognise refugee status and 1.9% were decisions to grant subsidiary protection status.
- The largest number of refugee statuses were granted to Palestinians, Syrians, Eritreans and Afghans. Subsidiary protection status was most often granted to Yemenis, Syrians and Sudanese.
- The CGVS workload remains particularly high, amounting to 26.619 cases (concerning 32.007 people) at the end of 2024.
The Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration commented on these figures, particularly stressing the need to combat secondary movements within the EU. According to Nicole de Moor, 15.685 applicants were already registered in another Member State and 4.825 of them had already been recognised as refugees in other Member States.
