240 applications for international protection have been processed in the accelerated procedure since 1 February 2024

The Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration announced that applications for international protection from people from safe countries of origin have been processed in 12 working days and those from people originating from countries for which a low rate of protection is granted in 39 days, since 1 February 2024. This aims to free up places in the reception network for those who actually need protection.

On 1 February 2024, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration announced that applications from nationalities that have very little chance of obtaining international protection would be processed in an accelerated procedure. This procedure applies to asylum seekers from countries on the list of safe countries of origin (including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Kosovo, Moldavia, Montenegro, Republic of North Macedonia, and Serbia) and from countries with a low recognition rate (in particular the Democratic Republic of Congo and Georgia). The aim was to process these applications within 50 working days.

On 11 May 2024, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration revealed figures showing that the objective was achieved. In the meantime, 240 applications have already been processed within the accelerated procedure. According to Nicole de Moor, applications of people from safe countries of origin are processed in 12 working days, and those of people with little chance of protection in 39 working days.
