As from 1 March, Flemish integration exam will become stricter around "fundamental values"
Flemish Minister for Home affairs, Administrative affairs, Civic integration and Equal opportunities, Bart Somers, wants newcomers to succeed in 9 out of 11 questions about the Belgian fundamental values.
Newcomers have to take a standardized exam for the social orientation course. In this exam 41 questions are asked, 11 of which are about fundamental values and 30 about practical knowledge about the Belgian society. Currently, newcomers have to respond correctly to half of these questions. Currently, 95% of newcomers pass this test.
As from 1 March 2023, newcomers have to respond correctly to 9 out of the 11 questions regarding the fundamental values, that is to say they have to achieve a percentage of 82%. Questions relate inter alia to equality between men and women, freedom of expression, separation of church and state, the role of human rights in our society.
Bart Somers: “When it comes to fundamental values, I ask for a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, it is not enough just to succeed.”.
