Belgium contributes to Europol operation against human trafficking networks using online platforms to enable their criminal activities

In a coordinated effort to combat human trafficking, Europol hosted an international operational action from 25 to 28 February 2025, bringing together experts in analysis, OSINT (Open Source Intelligence), and investigations from 12 countries, including Belgium. The operation focused on detecting and disrupting human trafficking networks operating online, particularly those exploiting Ukrainian nationals.

The operation’s intelligence-driven approach aimed to map and prioritise high-impact criminal networks, detect new victims, and identify potential human traffickers. Throughout the four-day operation, participating countries, including Belgium, conducted real-time data crosschecks, identifying 21 potential traffickers and 41 potential victims of human trafficking. Europol played a key role in facilitating the operation, providing logistical, financial and analytical support.

As criminal networks increasingly exploit online platforms for recruitment, facilitation, advertisement, payment, and victim control, traditional investigative methods are being reinforced with advanced digital technologies. This operation provided a unique opportunity to test and evaluate these tools, ensuring law enforcement agencies stay ahead of emerging threats and adapt to the evolving nature of trafficking crimes.

Belgium’s involvement underscores its commitment to combating human trafficking, particularly in the digital space, through continued collaboration with European partners and support from Europol.
