Romania, France and Ukraine are the main nationalities among foreign immigration to Belgium, according to Myria

Myria has published the first thematic section of its 2025 annual report. This section, entitled "Population and movements", reveals that foreign nationals made up over 13% of the Belgian population as of 1 January 2024. Immigration from Romania, France and Ukraine was particularly high. The report also details key trends in foreign residence permits, demographic profiles and migratory flows.

Myria, the Federal Migration Centre, releases the 2025 annual report “Migration in figures and rights” in several thematic notebooks. On 30 June 2025, the first thematic section entitled "Population and movements" was published, highlighting, among other things, the following conclusions:

  • As of 1 January 2024, Belgium had 11.763.650 official residents, including 1.607.707 foreign nationals (13.7% of the population) and 10.155.943 Belgians. Among the Belgian population, 2.5 million individuals were of foreign origin, representing 21% of the total population.

  • In 2023, 173.033 foreign nationals immigrated to Belgium, while 91.781 emigrated. Immigration decreased by 18% compared to 2022, and emigration rose by 13%.

  • Half of foreign immigration came from EU countries, followed by 15% from non-EU European countries, 15% from Asia, 14% from Africa and 4% from the Americas.

  • The top three nationalities among foreign immigrants were Romanian (20.888 people, 12%), French (8%), and Ukrainian (8%).

  • In 2023, 159.309 first residence permits were issued to foreign nationals in Belgium—a 17% drop from 2022, largely due to fewer arrivals under temporary protection for Ukrainians.

  • Among third-country nationals, the main reasons for issuing first residence permits were family reasons (31%), temporary protection (19%), international protection (13%), studies (12%) and remunerated activities (11%).
