Processing of protection claims from Syrians remains suspended in Belgium until at least July

On 23 April 2025, the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) announced an extension of the suspension of the processing of applications for international protection from Syrian nationals. The suspension, initially introduced on 9 December 2024, will remain in place until at least the end of July 2025.

This measure means that personal interviews and decisions remain on hold for most Syrian applicants. Only cases involving persons who already benefit from protection in another EU Member State continue to be processed.

According to the CGRS, there is still not enough objective and up-to-date information available to assess the security situation across Syria or to determine the risk faced by different profiles of applicants.

The CGRS first introduced this temporary measure in response to evolving conditions in Syria. Processing will only resume once sufficient information is available to ensure accurate and fair decision-making.
