487 persons were resettled in Belgium in 2024, according to Fedasil
Fedasil revealed that Belgium resettled 487 people in 2024, exceeding the 287 resettled in 2023. The refugees resettled in 2024 mainly came from countries such as Syria, Congo, Eritrea and Sudan.
In September 2023, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor, decided to continue Belgium's resettlement program in 2024 and renewed the commitment made in 2023, setting a quota of 500 places for resettlement in Belgium.
In a press release from 11 February 2024, Fedasil reported that 487 persons were resettled in Belgium last year, mainly Congolese refugees from Rwanda (210) and Syrian refugees from Turkey (139). Eritreans, Somalis, Afghans, Sudanese, Cameroonians, Ivorians and Burkinabe are also among those resettled. Fedasil specifies that, of the persons resettled, 84% were families, while 16% were isolated men or women. Some 40% were under 18.
Of the 487 resettled refugees, 400 were received at the Alveringem centre in West Flanders, which is exclusively dedicated to the reception of resettled individuals. Additionally, the reception centres in Pondrôme and Saint-Trond also accommodated resettled refugees. Several resettled individuals were welcomed outside the formal reception network through community sponsorship and partnerships, supported by partner organisations and volunteers.
