The EUAA supports Belgium in the framework of the operational plan 2025-2026

From 1 January 2025 until 31 December 2026, the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) will support Belgium to increase the capacities of the national asylum and reception authorities. Asylum support teams will be deployed to support the registration and processing of cases as well as the design, update and implementation of specific systems and tools.

The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has been supporting Belgium since 2022, in the framework of an Operational Plan (OP), in an effort to further enhance the quality of the national reception system.

In December 2024, the Executive Director of the EUAA signed a new operational plan for 2025-2026 with the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons, the General Director of Fedasil, and the General Director of the Immigration Office. The plan's implementation period, including the foreseeable duration of the deployment of asylum support teams, shall be from 1 January 2025 until 31 December 2026.

According to the new plan, operational and technical assistance will be provided to Belgium with a view to attaining:

  • increased institutional and response capacity of national asylum authorities, inter alia supporting national authorities in conducting registrations of international protection applicants, in processing asylum applications under the admissibility procedure at first instance and Dublin cases.

  • increased institutional capacity of national authorities in reception, inter alia supporting the design/update and implementation of reception management frameworks, of information and data management systems and of frameworks and tools on vulnerability in reception procedures.

The deployment of asylum support teams on-site or at the national level is the key modality for the agency's provision of operational and technical support.
