Belgium launches new awareness campaign on the occasion of the Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation International Day

According to estimates, Belgium has 23,000 women circumcised and 12,000 girls at risk of being circumcised. The Group for the Abolition of Female Genital Mutilation (Gams) raises awareness of the two treatment centers for victims of female genital mutilation (FGM) accredited in Belgium.

The campaign, coordinated by the Gams and financed by the Institute for Equality between Women and Men, provides information on two reference centers: CHU Saint-Pierre (the CeMAViE centre) and UZGent (Vrouwenkliniek). The centers provide a holistic approach and offer women and girls who have undergone genital mutilation medical, psychological, sexological and surgical support, which is fully reimbursed by the health insurance fund.

At EU level

Every year at least 20,000 women and girls are coming to Europe from FGM-risk countries as asylum seekers. On 8 March 2022, the Commission put forward a new proposal to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence and will adopt a specific Recommendation on the prevention of harmful practices, including FGM in 2023. This would include additional, specialised support and protection for its victims.

At international level:

The United Nations strive for the full eradication of Female Genital Mutilation by 2030, inter alia through the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation.  In December 2022, the governments of Belgium, Germany and Sweden have pledged new funding to the above-mentioned Joint Programme. An additional $23.1 million dollars from the donor countries will help prevent thousands of women and girls from undergoing female genital mutilation in the years to come.
